The Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) celebrated its 80th birthday at 5th Canadian Division Support Base (5 CDSB) Gagetown’s Bridge Maintenance Facility (Building K4) on Thursday, May 16th, 2024. Currently serving and retired RCEME members and their families from Atlantic Canada were invited to the festivities.

RCEME comprise of soldier-technicians and officers in the Canadian Armed Forces that maintain all the Army’s ground-based equipment. Chances are, if the army uses it, a RCEME Technician is behind the maintenance and upkeep of it. While the Corps has a longstanding history of service to the Canadian army, it received official status on May 15th, 1944.

The day was kicked off with cake cutting, followed by various sports and activities that included: a car show, video game tournament, bowling, and more! In the afternoon, there was a luncheon provided by six food trucks and the day was concluded by a competitive buggy race.

It has been a longstanding tradition for RCEME technicians to build small race buggies and compete on RCEME Day. These buggies go through an obstacle course and drag race to win the coveted title of “best buggy”. Technicians spend their evenings and weekends leading up to RCEME Day to build these buggies and put their technician skills to the test. The buggies must pass through a safety panel before they can be allowed to officially race.

5 CDSB Gagetown congratulates RCEME on their 80th anniversary and thanks them for their continued technical support for various equipment on base and for helping us maintain our operations!
