5th Canadian Division Support Base (5 CDSB) Gagetown wishes everyone a Happy Canada Day! Our nation has made many achievements in numerous fields over the years. From telephones to insulin, Canadian inventions have changed the world for better. Our athletes have outdone themselves at international competitions and continue to proudly represent Canada on the world stage. We also take time to remember the sacrifices made by our veterans that have served to protect our freedoms and way of life.

On 1 July, it is also Memorial Day in Newfoundland, to commemorate the loss of approximately 700 soldiers of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment on the first day of the Battle of the Somme during World War I. The regiment suffered a casualty rate of roughly 90% and only 68 men of the original 780 were available for roll call the next day. The Newfoundland National War Memorial was created in the memory of these men in 1924 and now represents all Newfoundland veterans that served throughout Newfoundland’s history. This year, a ceremony will be held to mark its 100th anniversary. This will also include the reinterment of the remains of an unknown Newfoundland First World War soldier.

Canada Day is about celebrating the achievements of our nation, and reflecting on things that can be improved for the future generations. 5 CDSB Gagetown also thanks the veterans and service members of the past and present in helping keep our country safe and protecting its national interests.
