The Defence Team at Base Gagetown spent time strengthening their mental and emotional resilience as part of the base’s annual Emotional Fitness Week from January 22 to 26, 2024.

The week was highlighted by events such as Mental Health Break sessions, Mental Fitness and Suicide Awareness workshop, the speaker series, yoga session, and outdoor recreation that included cross country skiing/snowshoeing. The week included meaningful conversations, introspection, and physical activities—all things that help improve our emotional fitness.

Mental break sessions gave individuals time for themselves, the Mental Fitness and Suicide Awareness Workshop provided an inclusive space to have the tough conversions regarding mental health and suicide awareness, and activities such as yoga and snowshoeing gave an opportunity to have fun and take care of our physical and mental health.

This week continued the work of positive cultural change in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) towards a de-stigmatization of mental illness.

It’s important to remember that emotional fitness is a continual process and resources are available for your support. Let’s be the change we want and be open to conversations, self-help, and being an ally for others who may be struggling.
