Amid the current increase in areas with ticks causing Lyme disease across the region, the following information should be adhered to for the prevention of Lyme disease, whether on Base, in the Range and Training Area (RTA), or in your own backyard.

Lyme disease signs and symptoms (three to 30 days after a tick bite)

  • Fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches as well as swollen lymph nodes;
  • 60-80% likelihood of rash occurring around the bite, within the above-mentioned timeframe;
  • Expanding rash in the affected area reaching up to 30 cm across, including being warm to the touch but rarely itchy or painful; and
  • Rash sometimes clearing as it enlarges resulting in a target or bullseye appearance.

It is important to seek medical advice if you have been bitten or if you have any of the above signs or symptoms following a suspected tick bite.

Questions relating to tick and Lyme disease prevention should be identified to the 42 CF H Svcs PMED at 506-422-2000 ext. 2219/ 2269 at Base Gagetown or your local CFHS PMED Technician.
