The New Brunswick Military Family Resource Centre (NBMFRC), in conjunction with the New Brunswick Military History Museum (NBMHM) sent hand-knitted items such as toques, mittens, scarves, and socks for Canadian soldiers currently deployed in Latvia for Op REASSURANCE on February 29, 2024 at 5th Canadian Division Support Base (5 CDSB) Gagetown.

The “Knitting Remembrance and Recognition” exhibit was launched at NBMHM from January 23, 2024 to March 29, 2024. They reached out to the NBMFRC to create a program to re-enact the great Canadian wartime tradition of creating “knitted comforts” for Canadian soldiers currently serving overseas.

The first shipment was presented to 2 RCR Rear Party and was brought over to Latvia on March 01, 2024. A large number of knitters got involved with the project and a second shipment will be sent to Latvia at the end of March!

The chaplain of 2 RCR Battle Group in Latvia will distribute the knitted items to the troops in-theatre, on March 08, International Womens Day, to help celebrate the work of women knitters who supported the war effort during all of Canada’s overseas conflicts, to the present day.

We would like to thank all of the knitters that took part and look forward to future projects they participate in.
